Chemical Plant Expansion Joints

Sector: Chemical Manufacturing

Background

A major Ammonium Nitrate plant in New South Wales, Australia, needed specialised expansion joints for its complex piping system. The plan operates under corrosive conditions and demanding operating cycles, so every component must be extremely strong and durable.

Challenge

The main challenge was to design expansion joints that could:

  • Handle high internal pressure
  • Absorb both lateral and angular movements
  • Resist corrosive media
  • Meet strict industry design and testing standards for severe cyclic service.

Solution

We delivered a tailored solution that included:

  • Two Double-Tied Expansion Joints: These joints were designed to absorb large axial movements while restraining pressure thrust. This protects the piping system and ensures stability during operation.
  • One Double Gimbal Expansion Joint: This unit was engineered to absorb angular movement in all directions. It also restrains pressure thrust, making it ideal for complex pipe configurations.
Key features across all units:
  • High-Performance Materials: Wetted parts made from 316H stainless steel, and bellow membranes from Inconel 625 LCF.
  • Durable Flanges: Each unit featured floating load-bearing flanges made from 304 stainless steel, providing secure and reliable connection points.
  • Standards & Compliance: All units were built to the EJMA 10th Edition and ASME B31.3 standards for severe cyclic service, ensuring safety, reliability, and long service life.

Technical Data

  • Type: 2x Double Tied, 1x Double Gimbal Expansion Joints

Result

The plant received a set of precision-engineered expansion joints designed to handle extreme operating conditions. These joints now play a crucial role in maintaining system safety and performance, providing long-term durability and precise control of movement. This has significantly improved the reliability and efficiency of the plant’s operations in New South Wales.
